Guest Blog from TrueFitness: Questions and Answers

Some Answers-

Today I want to answer a few of the typical questions that most people have about fitness and what to do to improve your workouts. These are typical of questions asked by clients and athletes and should help you with your program.

How do I turn fat into muscle?
You cannot turn fat into muscle. What you can do is burn fat off while building or increasing muscle. So in essence you are replacing fat on your body with muscle.

How do I get a six pack?
First the bad news is that the appearance of a “6 pack” can be based on genetics. After that consideration, just doing ab crunches will never produce a flat stomach and the appearance of a “6 pack”. The only way to get a six pack is through proper dieting, cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. Doing ab crunches will not help burn off the fat that is covering your midsection so the first thing that must be done is the burning off of the fat covering your abs.

Should I eat before or after my workout first thing in the morning? The answer to this question is in two parts. If you are doing resistance training then you should always eat something before working out. When building muscle you need to have calories in your system in order to have the ability to build muscle. Being depleted will cause the body to burn off muscle which is never what you want to do. The second part of the answer is that if you are doing cardiovascular exercise then it is generally accepted that not eating before will help to burn off a slightly higher percentage of stored body fat which is the reason why most people do aerobic exercise.

If I run everyday do I need to do any other exercise?
Yes you absolutely need to still workout your legs in other ways and your upper body as well. You need to do squats, lunges and other exercises that build leg muscles and leg strength. Running as the only means of exercise can actually be detrimental as this can cause overuse injuries such as stress fractures and tendonitis. Building up bone density and connective tissue strength as is the result that happens with resistance training can prevent these injuries. The additional leg strength will also help with leg power and can improve your kick during runs.

I do CrossFit and is that is all I need to do?
This is another myth and falsehood brought on by blind allegiance to a paradigm. CrossFit is great for working out. Their program will help you improve fitness, burn calories and get in better shape. However, CrossFit is limited in its sports performance application because in only works in the sagital plane, which are straight ahead movements. Sport is a not simply straight ahead. It is multi directional and involves multiple planes with many different movement requirements that simply are not trained during CrossFit exercises. Training for sports performance means training laterally, rotational, forward, and backward as well as preparing for the unknown that is the chaos of sport. Only doing CrossFit will not take care of these sport requirements and although you may appear to be in great shape you are not in great sports performance shape.

Hopefully this clears up some questions some of you may be having regarding your training. As always, if you do have any questions please don’t hesitate to send us an email and we will answer any questions you may have.

Tournament schedule here.

Welcome to New York!  On behalf of Metropolitan New York Rugby Union’s Host Committee, I am happy to welcome you to Emirates Airline USA Rugby All-Star Sevens, held in New York for the second straight year.

The Tournament

Opening Ceremonies to be at 9:40 am on Saturday, featuring renown opera singer Stephen Gaertner singing the national anthem.  The match schedule will be posted shortly but matches will start at approximately 10 am Saturday and run all day until approximately 5 pm.  Matches resume on Sunday at approximately 9:40 and run all day with short breaks until the womens and mens finals at 2:00 and 2:30 pm respectively.  The afterparty is at Papillion Bistro, East 54th St between 5th and Madison from 4:3o0 onwards.

The VIP Enclosure

New for this year are VIP tickets, a limited number of which are available from http://emiratesairlineallstarrugby.eventbrite.com/ VIP tickets are $70 per day and include unlimited wine, beer, soft drinks and catered food all day, access to VIP bleachers, tent and enclosure, and an All Access pass.

The Venue and Facilities

The competition will be held on new high-quality artificial turf fields on Randall’s Island  Both the match field and a warm-up field are dedicated to the tournament all day on Saturday August 28th and Sunday the 29th.  Information about the facilities is posted here. There will be bleachers, tents for players, officials and VIPs, portajohns, food service including beer and wine, a videotaping service, athletic trainers and medical professionals on site, event T Shirts for sale, and a concession with merchandise and information about USA Sevens in Las Vegas 2011.  We hope to repeat last year’s arrangements for laundry service and ice baths for competitors.

Travel Arrangements

Updated Hotel Information and Google maps of local amenities are under Pre-tournament Info.  We suggest those staying in Manhattan need not rent cars, as parking in Manhattan is expensive and time consuming.  Subway and bus connection to Randall’s Island from the tournament hotels in Manhattan are relatively swift, and we post volunteers to help people navigate the trip early on Saturday and to the extent possible on Friday afternoon when teams visit the island for practices.

Publicity

This website will contain press releases as they are issued, sample photographs and links to photographs of this year’s event from Official Tournament Photographer Jess Bunshaft.  Look for us on Facebook, LinkedIn and Eventbrite.  Streaming video of the event will be on Ustream.com, and live scores will be posted to Mobilescore.

Thanks

Please join me in thanking the members of our incredibly hard-working Host Committee, who have all contributed countless hours towards this weekend’s success.  We would especially like to thank Emirates Airline, Gilbert, World  Rugby Shop and Canterbury and Opro for their support of USA Rugby.   We also heartily thank the following organizations for their loyal support of this event:

from Scrumqueens:

from rwcwomens.c

Ireland 22 USA 12

Ireland prevailed in this exciting and tough pool B clash on day two of the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

This was always going to be a key game in this pool and with Ireland having lost their opener against England, a win was very much needed to keep any hopes of a semi-final spot alive.

Click HERE for the full match report.

Ireland kept their hopes of a first ever semi-final spot alive after their bonus point win over the USA. Watch the video highlights here which includes an interview with Joy Neville who scored two tries on the day she won her 50th cap!

England 82 Kazakhstan 0

England crushed Kazakhstan in a 12 try rout in their second round World Cup clash. This was always going to be a difficult task for Kazakhstan who are years behind England in terms of funding, resources and indeed ability and their opponents proved to be far superior on the day.

The result puts England in pole position to take the top seeding from the pool stages ahead of the semi-finals as they have gone ahead now of both Canada and the Black Ferns in terms of points scored. They have conceded nothing yet in their pool games which will also be a source of pride to Gary Street’s charges who will hope they can keep that defensive effort clean in their final pool game against the USA.

Help the USRFF Provide 30,000 Rugby Balls to America’s Rugby Youth

Special Announcement for A Ball 4 All Campaign

The USRFF’s A Ball 4 All Campaign rescheduled for September 1
Help the USRFF Provide 30,000 Rugby Balls to America’s Rugby Youth

Due to the huge interest in the Pepsi Refresh Project and the large number of submissions for August, the United States Rugby Football Foundation’s A Ball 4 All campaign has been rescheduled. The new projected start date will be Wednesday, September 1, 2010.

The new start date may actually be a blessing in disguise as it will give the USRFF an extra 30 days to plan on how to receive as many votes as possible. It will also give you more time to reach out to your friends and family within and outside your rugby circle to support the A Ball 4 All initiative.
I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Having heard from hundreds of you, I knew many of you were chomping on the bit to cast your votes only to have to wait another 30 days. It’s kind of like being all keyed up for the kickoff of a match only to be told the game has been delayed 30 minutes due to an unforeseen circumstance.

Please be assured that we will do everything in our power to guarantee a September 1st launch date for the A Ball 4 All campaign. We will once again whet your whistle with a testimonies from past and present international players towards the end of August in preparation of the September campaign.

Thank you for your patience and your support of the USRFF and the A Ball 4 All Campaign.
Best regards,

Brian Vizard
Executive Director
United States Rugby Football Foundation

Guest Blog: Megan G. and her Rugby Purses

from Megan:

I made my first purse in the Spring of 2007 while I was at home, sick with bronchitis and without a voice. I was bored, happened to have a ball that wouldn’t hold air lying around, and wanted to see what was inside! So I cut it open and a vision was born!

I realized how durable the rugby ball would be as a purse and how much it could hold. So I took straps and parts from an old purse and super glued them on the ball. I still use that purse today, 2 ½ years later. I’ve had to re-glue it several times and as I started making more purses, I’ve made drastic improvements. I sew now!… and I use heavy upholstery thread to double stitch a durable zipper to the ball. I’ve also upgraded to use the following materials included on each custom hand-made purse: cleat stud feet, prefabricated handles to add style, grommets/ eyelets, and durable webbing (backpack strapping). These purses are made to last a long time.
It’s the perfect purse to take to a rugby social. They’re pretty much waterproof and the more they get scuffed up and used, the better they look. Ladies, never feel guilty again when you put your purse on the floor under your chair at a restaurant! Gentlemen, if you have to hold your lady’s purse while she uses the bathroom, wouldn’t you rather hold a rugby ball purse?

These purses are conversation pieces and a GREAT way to spread the word about our awesome sport! They are a way to express your rugby side when it’s not appropriate to be wearing a crude rugby t-shirt. People ask about my purse on a daily basis and some stop me to take picture of it.

My goal is to make it to NZ Rugby World Cup 2011 with the profits from purses so I can cheer our Eagles on in person!!! To contact Megan about purchasing or just letting her know you think her purses are super awesome, email Megan or visit her on Facebook.

Ruck on with style!
