(left to right) Barbie Blair, Jo Lisa Hargrove, Amanda Eddie Mikeska, Linsey Ed Wojtasczyk and Carla Jo Ehlinger.

Linsey Wotjasczyk, club president and flyhalf, thinks this semester will be different. As a team, these ladies have set team and individual goals and assigned accountability for accomplishment – fitness and on-field basics taking priority. These goals and their corresponding accountability have put purpose behind the team’s practices that was not present in the fall.

An extra recruiting push has helped the team, as well. Wotjasczyk reported an e-mail inbox with questions from parents of the students they’ve recruited about the seriousness of the A&M Women’s rugby program. Linsey was recruited by former coach Jim Schreiner while she was a high school senior playing rugby at St. Pius X in Houston. So she’s well placed to answer questions about the seriousness of the program.

The Aggie Women have also been blessed this semester with the coaching efforts of former players Nick James and Stephanie Dvorak. These two have been rolling into Aggieland from their Houston-area jobs during the week to drill the team on their goals: fitness, basics and tackling hard (Did I leave that out earlier?)! The team’s gratitude for the efforts these two have put forth is immense!

But is all this enough to motivate the Lady Ags to overcome the University of Texas Women this Saturday? It’s a lot, to be sure. But, they’ve also got some awesome players on their side:

Marki “The Hulk” Hoyne at prop who likes to run over other ruggers in practice and in games alike!
Kelley Storey at Flanker and Jessica Bivens at #8 are putting in the work-rate from the back-row.
Former U19 standout Rachel Watson is providing the speed on the wing.
And the fast and elusive Jo Lisa Hargrove is running havoc at Outside Center or Fullback.

These and a veteran backline with a feel for each other’s playing styles should bring the team together for a stronger performance this weekend than they experienced this fall. Don’t call it a comeback, but that IS what these Aggies are aiming to achieve!

A&M MUST win out this semester to advance in the playoffs as the number one women’s collegiate team in Texas will advance to the Division 1 playoffs and the number two team will advance to the Division 2 playoffs (according to Wendy Young on Episode 2 of the Texas Rugby Show).

“We talked about How to Train a Dragon,” said Austin Hall, Head Coach of Norwich University, and the first ever Women’s College Sevens Champions. “We used that movie as a backdrop to our team and style this weekend,” continued Hall noting that his team needed to continue to work hard and hope for the best.

It must have worked. Norwich University dominated Boston College in the cup final of the Women’s College Sevens 34 – 5. Norwich came out of the gates with intensity that was unmatched all weekend.

“We knew we would win if we just had fun, worked hard, and kept our game simple,” said Captain Kate Hathaway. And that they did. Norwich University exploited BC in the simple side of the game, completing more passes, making more of their tackles, and using possession to get points on the board.

They were crisp in their execution and showed that they were the better conditioned team outrunning and outworking Boston College in the open field but especially at the breakdown. Norwich continuously turned over the ball by thoroughly counter-rucking Boston’s vulnerable support.

Rebekah Bernheim was named MVP of the final, and undoubtedly deserved it. Scoring tries all weekend, Bernheim touched down twice in the final, showing her pace and hard support lines through the 20 minute game, putting up six tries to Boston’s one.

Norwich quickly fell into a pattern and found themselves thinking about the post-match interviews. “I actually thought about this interview during the game,” said Hall. “We were playing our game, and I knew we would win if we just kept playing the way we have all weekend,” continued the head coach.

Norwich University Rugby is a varsity program with the support of their Athletic Department and unyielding commitment of the individual players.

“We owe a lot of support to our alumni and Athletic Department, and the girls are just excited about playing rugby, whether for a championship or just a friendly,” said Coach Hall.

As they are usually focused on fifteens rugby, Norwich used the traditional code to prepare for this inaugural tournament. “We never play sevens, we are focused more on fifteens, but we came to College Station to win. Whatever style we play, we are always focused on having fun and winning,” said Hathaway.

Although the weekend was filled with intense and exhausting sevens action, Norwich came out on top in the end though by managing their downtime properly according to Hall, explaining that in sevens it’s more about getting the body and mind conditioned for a whole day of periods of action and recovery.

“The girls were exhausted but knew that we had to turn it on for this match,” said the captain. “We just wanted it really bad, we wanted to win a National Championship,” added Hathaway.

Norwich is already looking to next year’s title. “We have fifteens this spring but we can’t wait to come back and defend our title in sevens rugby,” said the captain. Young programs will undoubtedly look to Norwich University as an example of stellar rugby. Be it their varsity sport status, intense simplicity on the field, or reliance on children’s cinema for inspiration, these girls know how to play rugby and are now the 2011 USA Rugby Women’s College Sevens National Champions.

There were a number of other hard workers through out the weekend and a few more champions in the Women’s Sevens Championships. The University of California won the Plate Final defeating Oregon State 19-5 while the University of Texas beat Arizona State 26-5 in the Bowl Final.

Nov. 19-20, Cherry Hill, NJ – On a warm and sunny Fall day, the National Small College Rugby Organization’s (NSCRO) Divisions 3 and 4 Women’s Collegiate Championships were concluded. The Minnesota RFU Champ Carleton College (Northfield, MN) pull away in the second half from the East Penn RU Champ Lock Haven University (Lock Haven, PA) 59 to 7 to win the Division 3 National Championship. While in the Division 4 National Championship, the New England RFU Champ Johnson State College (Johnson, VT) held off the East Penn RU Champ Albright College (Reading, PA) 12 to 5 to claim the title.

In Saturday’s D3 semifinals, Lock Haven took an early lead against the New York State RC Champion St. Bonaventure University (Olean, NY) and held off a second half rally to win 36-10. Carleton then faced the New England RFU Champion, Wentworth Institute of Technology (Boston, MA) and seemed to have the match under control as they took a 29-5 second half lead. All of a sudden about 10 minutes into the second half, WIT put their foot ‘on the pedal’ and played on their front foot without stopping and ran in 3 tries. They came up short in the end 29-22.

On Sunday, Lock Haven faced Carleton in the D3 final under the watchful eye of referee Pete Hesler. If you ever wondered what solid coaching can do for a collegiate club, look no further than Carleton College. They showed solid skills in all phases while not always producing the results they wanted, they never yielded and showed ball handling skills rarely seen at this level. Carleton’s lock Avery Johnson picked up the ball at the back of ruck and powered in from 5 meters to give her team a 5-0 led 3 minutes into the match. Haven’s inside center Kayla Robison responded with a strong 30 meter run and with the conversion Carleton was down 7-5. For the next 10 minutes the team pushed into each other’s end only to be stopped. Another goal line ruck found Avery Johnson with the ball and again she could not be stopped from scoring and give her team a 10-7 lead. Flyhalf Robin Burrell picked up a loose ball and scampered 10 meters to score and with the conversion by winger Adriane Kisch-Hancock, Carleton took a 17 to 7 led at halftime.

The second half showed Lock Haven was ready to come back but despite their strong attacks they could not score. Arden Caffrey, Carleton’s no. 8, scored a fine try 12 minutes into the half with another Kisch-Hancock conversion, it was 24-7. Carleton’s pressure and quick passing started paying off and they ran into 5 more tries, all converted to pull away to a 59 to 7 win and end a perfect season with no losses and a National Championship.

In an excellent match for 3rd place, Wentworth scored a late try to edge St. Bonaventure 19 to 17. Both teams had something to prove after losing in the semifinals and both did so. Both clubs showed their mettle and the match went up and down the field.

Carleton’s Arden Caffrey was named MVP, while Lock Haven’s outstanding flanker, Erin Smith, was awarded the game ball.

Johnson State College Women's RFC - NSCRO Division 4 National Champion, photo by Steve Cohen

In the Division 4 Championship match, with a large contingent of fans from both sides along with school mascots (the Albright Lion and Johnson State Badger) cheering the teams, referee Terry Haas’s whistle started what was to be a very entertaining match. Johnson State winger Miranda Ingram broke 2 tackles to give her team a 5-0 lead 10 minutes into the first half. Albright, which was dominant in their D4 season in the EPRU, responded and drove to the goal line but the Badger defense stopped the Lions time and again. The score held up at halftime. Center Nora Wynter showed great athletic prowess and was able to lead the Johnson State backs on attack after attack by continually breaking the gainline. Wynter broke through a 20 meter run scoring a fine try and with the conversion made it 12-0. The score stood up until Albright’s scrumhalf Jessica Tain recovered her own pop kick in-goal at the end of the match…making the final score 12-5. Johnson State’s rugby club was started in 2009 and now 2 year later…they are the Division 4 National Champion. Way to go Badgers!

Johnson States’s inside center Zahara “Nora” Wynter was named MVP, while Albright’s Jessica was awarded the game ball.

A crowd of nearly 200 spectators, including friends and families of the players, enjoyed the action on the field and the crowning of the 2 National Championships.

NY 7s is the largest and longest running sevens tournament in the United States. The New York Rugby Club has hosted The Tournament on the Saturday following Thanksgiving since 1959, and it traditionally marks the end of the Fall rugby season in the New York Metropolitan area. We had 130 teams in 2010 – the most in Tournament history! Thanks to Jessa Giordano for sending me the scores and results!

The first-ever true College Sevens National Championship will see 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams (a combined total of nearly 500 student-athletes) play in over 100 action-packed games over the course of the two day tournament in College Station, Texas.

The tournament will be used by National Team scouts and selectors to identify players that could be representing the USA in the 2016 Olympic Games.

“Rugby sevens has grown by leaps and bounds in the last two years, and this tournament will really be the first comprehensive scouting opportunity at the college level for the USA men’s and women’s sevens teams,” said Jim Snyder, USA Rugby’s Director of Rugby Operations.

“The Championships will be very exciting, but on top of that, many of the athletes have an opportunity to showcase their talents and plug themselves into the international pathway. We expect to see a number of these student-athletes in the Olympics one day,” Snyder said.

Representatives of the United States Olympic Committee will be on hand as well to catch a glimpse of the newest Olympic sport and the athletes that may represent Team USA in 2016.

The women’s teams will be chosen entirely by a selection committee. Those selections will be announced on Wednesday November 16. NOTE: They have not released the teams yet…. (Nov 21, 2011).

Also come find us for a free YSC Rugby Athletic shirt! Until we run out that is…

BROADCAST
USA Rugby is still finalizing the broadcast schedule, but it sounds like games on Field 1 may be broadcast. I am not sure if this will be for both days…Watch the broadcast at USA Rugby’s Ustream Channel. Since we will be there coaching, the YSC team will try to video tape as many games as we can and we will upload them to our Vimeo Channel after the event.
