Penn State and Norwich crowned Champions of Women’s College Rugby

STANFORD, Calif. – The Women of Penn State regained their title as National Champions, and Norwich earned that title for the second time in 6 months today in a thrilling day of Collegiate ruby.

Penn State produced a dominant second half to retain the title they lost last year to Army. Sadie Anderson was electric for the Nittany Lions scoring two tries to pull away from Stanford for the 32-12 win in the Emirates Airline USA Rugby DI Women’s College National Championship.

The game was more closely contended than the score line suggests. The first half resembled two heavyweight fighters exchanging blows as Penn State and Stanford attacked each other with nothing to lose. Stanford got on the board first in the 24th minute with a sensational try by Olabisi Ibrahim, who displayed fantastic footwork and power to open the scoring. Anderson and Penn State answered right back with a try to make it even just three minutes later. Stanford struck right back after five more minutes with a converted try from Fly-half Jamie Lawrence. Going into the break, Stanford held on to a 12-10 lead and it was anyone’s game.

The championship match was a tale of two halves however, and Penn State’s power and tenacity would prove to be the difference. Stanford had trouble putting together consistent phases due to State’s smothering defense. The Nittany Lion attack became relentless, and Stanford couldn’t keep the pace. Fly-half Kasey Ferlic put in a performance worthy of her MVP award, controlling Penn State’s pattern of play, leading to five unanswered second half tries. Final score Penn State 32 – Stanford 12.

Penn State has now won the DI National Championship five times since 2004, and are the team with the most National Championships to their name since the event started in 1991 with seven titles to their name.

The DII Championship match was a different story all together. From the opening kickoff Norwich dominated every aspect of play over a strong, but out-matched Winona State in an 82-12 thrashing.

Rebekah Bernheim, Emily Oor, and Emily Baugus were outstanding for the Norwich Cadets, scoring a brace of tries between them. Orr produced quick ball at Scrum Half all day for Baugus to distribute at 10. The Cadet’s pace and precision in the backs would prove too much to handle for Winona’s defense.

Winona St got on the board in the 22nd minute through their scrappy Scrum Half Georgia Porter. The Black Katts were actually quite effective on offense and defense, but Norwich was excellent in support and offloads in the tackle.

For all Winona’s efforts, it was not enough to contain the 13 try onslaught the Cadets produced. Norwich was clinical in the way they controlled the game, in large part due to the leadership and tenacity of Cadet captain Katie Hathaway who took home the MVP honors.

The DII Championship concludes a dream season for Norwich, who won the inaugural Women’s College Sevens National Championship just 6 months ago in College Station, Tex.

Fallbrook repeat as Girls High School National Champions

STANFORD, Calif. – The Fallbrook Warriors put on a fast paced display of running rugby to beat Lakewood 59-12, and claim the 2012 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Girls High School National Invitational Championship.

Fallbrook came into this tournament defending National Champions, and were out to prove once again they were the best in the land and repeat as Champs. The road a repeat championship game wouldn’t be a walk through though.

The Warriors opened the tournament in a re-match of last year’s final against a very young but tough Amazons side, winning that match 34-0. Next up on Day one for Fallbrook was Catholic Memorial out of Wisconsin. Catholic would push the Warriors before they distanced themselves for the 28 – 15 win. Lakewood also went through day 1 undefeated, which would set the stage for the championship on Day two.

Fallbrook’s game plan revolved around their pace in the backs, and in the opening minutes of the championship, their attack plans became apparent. Just two minutes into the first half Fabiola Gutierrez struck with a strong run from the 12 position. The tries would come hot and heavy for the rest of the game for Fallbrook from then on.

The Warriors ran in 12 tries on the way to a championship, let by Outside Center Casey Karl with three, the game was never in doubt. Fallbrook 59, Lakewood 5. Megan Pinson took home the MVP award, and deservedly so. Pinson was a consistent threat offensively, and a defensive barricade all weekend.

In the consolation matches earlier in the day, The Amazons out of Sacramento fell to Downingtown (PA) 12-15 in a tight match. Amazons made a furious second half comeback, but it was too little too late, and Downingtown held on to win the 7th/8th place match.

West Carroll (MD) was topped by Kent (WA) 27 – 5 in the 5th/6th match. And it was an all-Wisconsin affair in the 3rd/4th place match where DSHA held on to win 10-8 over in-state rival Catholic Memorial.

STANFORD, Calif. – The Emirates Airline USA Rugby Girls’ High School National Championship Invitational will cap off a showcase weekend for Women’s rugby at Stanford University this coming Saturday and Sunday.

The Girls Championship will be held in conjunction with the Division I & II Women’s College Championships on May 12-13, bringing together the present and the future of Women’s rugby at all levels.

USA Rugby’s Youth and High School Director Kurt Weaver says combining the event with the Colleges clearly defines the player’s pathway.

“With this event, the best get to play with the best, and the Coaches get to recruit. It’s a great showcase of the game & pathway from young ages and beyond.”

Adding to the excitement will be a special appearance by USA Eagles Captain Todd Clever. Clever will be on hand Saturday, May 19 from 2-3 p.m. giving athletes and fans alike the chance to meet the USA’s World Cup hero, collect autographs and take pictures.

The action on the pitch promises to as exciting as ever, with a rematch of last year’s championship match between Fallbrook and Amazons highlighting the Quarterfinals.

Defending Champion Fallbrook out of San Diego, will be one of the teams to watch over the weekend. Over the past weekend, they swept the Southern California Championships at every age grade level (U-14, U-16, and U-19) signifying the strength of their club.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. You can get your tickets the day of the event at the stadium. Full bracket, schedule, and event details can be found below and at usarugby.org.
